Week 2 - Assignment
Audience-Centered Professional Message
Assignment
Your portfolio: Interpersonal Communication Portfolio
Demonstrate that the same workplace information can be shaped responsibly for different readers and purposes.
Your task
Prepare a message about a delayed referral or service update for both a supervisor and the affected client.
What to submit
- A supervisor-facing email or brief memo of 250-350 words
- A client-facing message of 150-220 words
- A 1-page audience-and-channel rationale
- A revision note identifying three changes made for audience, purpose, or tone
How to complete it
- Define each audience's decision, concern, knowledge level, and likely constraint.
- Choose the channel and purpose-first structure for each message.
- Draft the two messages with consistent verified facts and different reader-centered choices.
- Revise headings, tone, accessibility, and call to action; annotate the revisions.
Check your work
- Each message makes its purpose and next action easy to find.
- Facts remain consistent while organization and tone fit the audience.
- The channel choice is justified using urgency, sensitivity, complexity, and record needs.
- The revision note names specific choices and their intended effect.
How your work will be reviewed
| Dimension | Evidence of readiness |
|---|---|
| Audience and purpose | Rationale identifies distinct reader needs and communication purposes. |
| Message design | Both messages use clear organization, appropriate detail, tone, and action. |
| Channel judgment | Channel choices are explained using the situation's constraints. |
| Revision | Changes are concrete, purposeful, and connected to reader response. |
Using AI
If you use AI to brainstorm or revise, document the tool, verify its output against the e-book and workplace scenario, and identify what judgment remained yours.
