Week 1 - Assignment

Communication Strategy Brief

Assignment

Your portfolio: Interpersonal Communication Portfolio

Create a brief strategy for responding to a pressured workplace interaction with listening, tone, and follow-through built into the plan.

Your task

Use the Nia Brooks and Mr. Alvarez scenario to plan a response that creates shared understanding before the next shift begins.

What to submit

  • A 1-page communication strategy brief
  • An observation-versus-interpretation table with at least three entries
  • A six-to-eight sentence model response
  • A 150-word reflection explaining one listening, tone, or feedback choice

How to complete it

  1. Identify the audience need, stated facts, observable signals, and known limits.
  2. Write two clarifying questions and a paraphrase that could be used in the conversation.
  3. Draft a response that names what is known, avoids unsupported claims, and gives a concrete next step.
  4. Revise for respectful tone, accessible language, and a documented follow-up owner and time.

Check your work

  • Observations are distinguishable from interpretations.
  • The response addresses the audience's likely need before presenting information.
  • The plan includes a clarifying question, paraphrase, action, and follow-up record.
  • The reflection explains the communication judgment rather than merely describing the artifact.
